🪔 This is one of our Diwali crafts, back in the spotlight from Sunday, 18 October 2026 — but you can make it any time you like.
← All projectsSalt-Dough Diya Lamps

Captain A will help you learn: Children shape and paint little diya lamps from salt dough and light them with battery tea lights. Diyas are small clay oil lamps lit during Diwali, the festival of lights celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains, to show light winning over darkness and good over evil. Children also see how baking slowly dries the dough until it is hard.
⚠️ Use battery tea lights only, never real candles or oil. An adult should handle the oven and hot trays. Salt dough is not food: it contains a lot of salt, which is harmful to young children and pets if eaten. Keep the tea light's button battery compartment closed and out of reach.
Play through the project step by step, with narration read aloud.

Secret Spell Scroll
Children invent a symbol code, write a hidden spell in white wax crayon and reveal it with watery paint. They learn how a substitution cipher works and why wax resists water, so the paint only soaks into the bare paper.

Fallen Leaf Ghost Parade
A leaf hunt becomes a ghost-making session, with each leaf's shape suggesting a different character. Children sort and compare leaves, learn to name a few trees and notice why leaves fall in autumn.

Frozen Monster Hand Rescue
Children rescue toy spiders trapped in a frozen monster hand, finding out that salt and warm water melt ice faster than cold water. It is a sensory way to explore melting, temperature and testing ideas.
