Secret Spell Scroll

On the first sheet, write the alphabet and invent a simple spooky symbol for each letter, such as a moon, a bat or a zigzag. This is your code key.

Think of a short magic spell or message, about four or five words long.

Dab the cold tea bag all over the second sheet to make it look old, tear the edges gently and leave it to dry.

Using your code key, write your spell on the dry scroll in symbols with the white wax crayon, pressing firmly.

Hold the paper up to the light to check you can only just see the waxy marks.

Give the scroll and the code key to a friend or grown-up.

Ask them to brush watery paint over the whole scroll and watch the hidden symbols appear.

Use the code key to work out each letter and read the spell aloud.

Let the scroll dry, roll it up and tie it with ribbon.
